EVOLVE 7 Results and Comments

-Shiima Xion def. Jimmy Jacobs to start things off in a quick match.

-Silas Young def Tony Nese. Nese had a great showing! Terrific match-up!

-Johnny Gargano def. John Davis in a hard-hitting match with great psychology.

-Frightmare and Jigsaw def. Jason Gory and Facade in a high flying match-up.

-Sami Callihan def. Zack Sabre Jr via KO. It was a slobber knocker of a match! INCREDIBLE!

-Intermission was up next. They showed Larry Sweeney vs. Sal Rinaro. R.I.P Sweeney.

-Upon returning from intermission, John Davis came out to address the crowd. Said he will "not let you down again."

-AR Fox def. Rich Swan in what was arguably the match of the night!

-Chuck Taylor def. Akira Tozawa in a very good match. I'm amazed Tozawa lost this one especially since he's been on fire as of late. Tozawa has IT!

-In a tie breaker match Johnny Gargano def. Chuck Taylor after Reby Sky threw in the towel. Total BS. The crowd and everyone in the iPPV chat did not approve.

-Austin Aries def. John Moxley in his final indy match. Moxley will indeed be missed. Hope he does well in the WWE!

-COMMENTS-

EVOLVE 7 was a strong Pro Wrestling show. While I wish EVOLVE would go more of the MMA route that they started out with, the wrestling remains solid from some of the hardest working guys in the business. There were certainly no bad matches on the card. In my opinion, you had one five star match with the majority of the rest being four stars. The productions values were VERY good. At least on our end, we didn't experience any issues. It should be noted that Lenny Leonard was not on commentary. I can't recall the name of the announcer who filled in. While he wasn't bad, he certainly wasn't great either. Austin Aries helped with commentary for the first part of the show and Jimmy Jacobs during the second.

THE BOTTOM LINE: EVOLVE 7 was well worth the money! You can view the replay now on http://www.wwnlive.com

Edge Announces Retirement

Less than a week after his successful title defense against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania XXVII, World Heavyweight Champion Edge has been forced to retire from in-ring competition due to injury. The unexpected news brings to an end a storied WWE career spanning 13 years and consisting of 11 World Title reigns.

The Rated-R Superstar had been suffering numbness and uncontrollable trembling in his arms and hands. This is not the first time Edge has experienced these symptoms of nueropraxia. An MRI in Atlanta last Monday was sent to Dr. Joseph Maroon, a renowned neurosurgeon and professor of neurosurgery at The Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After careful examination of the MRI, it was determined that Edge would never be cleared to compete again, and thus, he is forced to retire.

In 2003, Edge underwent a two level spinal fusion of the discs between his C5, C6 and C7 vertebrae. After being cleared to compete, The Rated-R Superstar returned to the ring, resulting in stenosis of the spine, or a narrowing of the spinal column, above and below the fused discs. This narrowing resulted in less and less of the vital fluid needed to protect the spinal cord. Medical professionals cannot clear Edge to compete ever again in WWE since doing so could result in paralysis or even death.

Larry Sweeney Passes Away At Age 29

Pro wrestling manager Alex Whybrow, who performed as Larry Sweeney for Ring of Honor and numerous American independent promotions, has died at the age of 29.

F4WOnline.com reports that he committed suicide either late last night or this morning. It is believed that he hung himself.

Whybrow suffered from bipolar disorder and had a breakdown in 2009, which he described as "the absolute worst event" of his life. He went through a long recovery process the following year.

He made sporadic appearances on the independent scene after parting ways with ROH in 2009.

Independent wrestler Chris Hero, a friend of Whybrow, commented on his passing on Twitter.

"We lost a dedicated friend and an overwhelmingly talented performer this morning," he wrote. "Alex Whybrow aka 'Sweet & Sour' Larry Sweeney has passed.

"We spent a few yrs together on the road & Alex was gifted beyond measure. He could enthrall you with colorful stories from his personal life or he could captivate thousands with his undeniable charisma. I loved him & my heart is with his family, friends & his countless fans. First he was my student & he transcended that almost immediately. I will forever cherish our in depth conversations & time spent together. Love you man. Miss you. Rest in Peace."

ROH - April 5th Newswire

Four New ROH Signings

ROH officials are happy to announce that several talents have re-signed contracts and one man has signed on the dotted line for the first time!

Rhett Titus, coming off a bloody brawl at “Honor Takes Center Stage: Chapter 2” against The Briscoes, has officially re-signed with Ring of Honor. A graduate of the ROH Wrestling Academy, Titus has truly broken out in the last year as a singles competitor with impressive outings against Jay Briscoe & Homicide, among others, as well as in the tag team ranks alongside All Night Express partner, Kenny King. They nearly captured the ROH World Tag Titles when The ANX took The Kings of Wrestling to the limit at the “9th Anniversary Show” and have now become embroiled in a heated rivalry with Jay & Mark Briscoe that saw much blood spilt in Atlanta last weekend. ROH is happy to have this talented young athlete officially on board, and we can also announce that both he and Kenny King will be in action when ROH returns to Dearborn & Toronto in May!

Bobby Cruise, the Voice of ROH, and Senior Official Todd Sinclair have also re-signed with Ring of Honor for the foreseeable future. For years the distinctive voice of Bobby Cruise has welcomed fans to ROH live events and introduced many a talent to the live audience. Todd Sinclair has officiated for ROH for many years as well, establishing himself as one of the best in the process, and earning the position of Senior Official. ROH would not be the same without either of these men and we are ecstatic that they will remain with Ring of Honor.

And for the first time, the powerhouse of The House Of Truth, Michael Elgin has signed a contract with Ring of Honor. Making his debut with the HoT back in November of last year, Elgin has truly established himself as a force with impressive showings against Christopher Daniels, Eddie Edwards, and El Generico just to name a few. Elgin’s combination of power & speed is sure to make him a force in the years to come here in Ring of Honor and we are excited to see what the future has in store for Michael Elgin. We can also announce that Elgin with join previously announced HoT members Christopher Daniels & Truth Martini in Dearborn & Toronto on May 6th & 7th.

3. Brodie Lee over Stalker Ichikawa

4. Brodie Lee over Chuck Taylor

5. Open the United Gate Titles: PAC & Masato Yoshino retain over CIMA & Naruki Doi

6. Arik Cannon & Sami Callihan (The Dirty Ugly Fucks) over Dark City Fight Club

7. Jimmy Jacobs over Austin Aries; post-match Aries calls out Ronin to put them over and pass the torch.  Interrupted by Blood Warriors.  Back and forth on the mic before Aries attacks Ronin and claims to have found his purpose in joining Blood Warriors.

8. Bunkhouse Match; Title Shot on the Line: Akira Tozawa over Jon Moxley

9. Open the Freedom Gate Title: YAMATO over Akira Tozawa to retain

ADDITIONAL COMMENTARY

Just like the previous nights event, Dragon Gate presented another incredible show! The entire card was well paced with a short intermission about halfway through. The Open the United Gate Titles match featuring PAC and Masato Yoshino vs. CIMA & Naruki Doi had to go close to a half hour if not longer. These guys put on an incredible match-up that is well worth the cost of the upcoming pay-per-view. But if that weren't enough, Austin Aries had what was his supposed final match in Dragon Gate U.S.A vs. Jimmy Jacobs. This was an emotional match that ended with Jacobs beating Aries. Aries of course began to obligatory speech that had all of us in the crowd emotionally invested. Aries called out Ronin, putting them over. Out came Blood Warriors in what looked to be interference. But it was all a ploy to lure Ronin in. Austin Aries struck along with the rest of Blood Warriors, leaving Ronin laying. All of us in the crowd were shocked and the memorable chant of "We Got Worked" rang true throughout the crowd. Hotlanta was hot for Akira Tozawa. Jon Moxley challenges Tozawa to a bunkhouse match, saying that if he can defeat him the Freedom Gate Championship will be on the line. This was a violent match that spilled out into the crowd. Yours truly took Moxley's boot to the shoulder as he was flung over the guard rail courtesy of Tozawa. Tozawa defeated Moxley and the belt was up for grabs! Everyone in the crowd was behind Tozawa and he and Yamato put on a five star match.

Truly, Dragon Gate U.S.A here in Atlanta is something I will never forget. Both Saturday and Sunday were incredibly special and two of the best days of my life. I can only hope that Dragon Gate will come back to Atlanta in the very near future. I look forward to writing reviews for these shows when they are available on DVD. -PWDragon

Jon Moxley to WWE?

LordsofPain.net
is reporting that WWE has offered Dragon Gate USA star Jon Moxley a developmental deal. Moxley was signed to DGUSA but they are releasing him with full blessings so he can sign with WWE. He finished with DGUSA over the weekend and will finish with EVOLVE on April 19th in New York City.

WWE Officially Drops The Word “Wrestling”

WWE has been distancing themselves from "wrestling" and moving towards "entertainment" since the end of the Attitude Era. The strange mentality of "Sports Entertainment" being better than "Pro Wrestling" is in some ways as silly as someone saying UFC is better than MMA. However, while "Pro Wrestling" and "Sports Entertainment" are one in the same, it has certainly become clear in recent years that there are differences. Sports Entertainment puts much more emphasis on more dialog, shorter matches and a lighter style of in-ring competition. Pro Wrestling is more focused on the (often times longer) wrestling match itself while still managing to put forth decent storylines. Matches are often times far more stiff and provide much more high-flying action. In the end though, they both take place inside a ring, surrounded by a crowd similar to how some MMA matches may take place inside an octagonal cage while others take place inside a ring.

Still, WWE continues to attempt to make "wrestling" a dirty word:
WWE officials have decided to stop using the word "wrestling" in their name. The company has issued an internal memo that the word "wrestling" is no longer to be used in any way, shape or form. From here on out, WWE's promotional material will refer to them as WWE Inc. and not World Wrestling Entertainment. This goes for everything from posters to books and commentary on WWE programming.
In essence, WWE is doing what KFC did a few years back. KFC used to be "Kentucky Fried Chicken" but since its re-branding, the company now prefers to (for whatever reason) just be referred to as KFC (get the Kentucky out...?). So it seems that though there are similarities, Pro wrestling and Sports Entertainment (or WWE if you prefer) will continue to move further away from one another as time goes on. It's up to the fans to support the type of entertainment they like and I for one will put my dollars towards high-quality independent promotions such as Ring of Honor and Dragon Gate.

Dragon Gate USA Results - Mercury Rising (Atlanta GA) 4/2/11

Dragon Gate U.S.A was without a doubt the best live event I have ever been to! I'll take it further than that: Seeing Dragon Gate U.S.A live tonight was one of, if not the, best night in my life! Amazing action, amazing crowd! Many people make fun of wrestling because they fail to understand it. But I was certainly able to suspend my belief for well over three hours while watching some of the most amazing athletes in the world exhibit the greatest art form there is or will ever be -- Pro Wrestling. You know the best part? There's another Dragon Gate event at 12:00 PM tomorrow. -PWDRAGON

Here are the results for tonights Dragon Gate USA iPPV

-BONUS CARD-
-Sal Rinauro def. Sugar Dunkerton
-RPW Tag Team Title Match: The Usual Suspects def. Hot Like Lava
-Jimmy Rave def. Kyle Matthews
-RPW Heavyweight Title Match: J-Rod def. Bull Buchanan

Jon Moxley vs Arik Cannon
Winner via pinfall John Moxley

Winner: Jon Moxley

Reby Sky comes out with a microphone to protest the decision, and Moxley shoves Valerie Malone at Reby, leading to a catfight between them. Reby gives Valerie a DDT, but Trina Michaels takes her shoe off and knocks Reby out from behind. Moxley dips Trina and lays one on her to celebrate.
We go to a backstage promo from Austin Aries saying he doesn’t need to be here in DGUSA but wants YAMATO’s title. Aries says nothing short of unconsciousness will put him down tonight, and tonight he will become a champion.

Elimination Match: Jimmy Jacobs vs Brodie Lee vs Stalker Ichickawa vs Silas Young vs AR Fox vs Jon Davis

Stalker Ichikawa is eliminated.
AR Fox is eliminated.
Silas Young is eliminated.
Jon Davis is eliminated.
Winner: Brodie Lee

We go backstage to Arik Cannon, who says he’s been doing this for a long time, and there are nights when you win and lose, but then there are nights like tonight where you get fucked. He’s pissed off, and now it’s time to do things his way.

Masato Yoshino vs Sami Callihan
 Winner  Masato Yoshino
We go backstage to Jon Moxley, and he says he’s a trendsetter and everyone follows everything he does, but Austin Aries is yesterday’s news and he’ll be out of DGUSA forever after he loses tonight…FOREVER! FOREVER! FOREVER! FOREVER! FOREVER! FOREVER! (In case you don’t know, he’s mocking an old Terry Funk promo)

Open The Brave Gate Title Match

PAC vs Akira Tozawa
Winner via pinfall PAC
We go backstage to Ronin, who say that they’re going to do the Dragon Gate six man a little different this year by proving that they belong in the ring with Blood Warriors and can beat them.
We go backstage to PAC, who simply tells Blood Warriors that they’ve got his attention, then walks off.

Open The Freedom Gate Title vs DGUSA Career

YAMATO vs. Austin Aries
Winner via pinfall YAMATO

We go backstage to Jimmy Jacobs who says sometimes he gets past the roadblocks and sometimes he doesn’t, because Brodie Lee beat him for the second time, but now he’s going to get back up tomorrow and wrestle Austin Aries in his last match in DGUSA. He says that while Aries had a hell of a match tonight, he didn’t get the job done, and tomorrow’s not going to see Aries ride off into the sunset, he’s going out with a bang and tomorrow will be his End Time.

Chuck Taylor, Johnny Gargano & Rich Swann vs CIMA, Naruki Doi & Ricochet
 Winners via pinfall Blood Warriors

Source: pwinsider.com

ADDITIONAL COMMENTARY

Mercury Rising was Dragon Gate's first event on iPPV. I was lucky enough to be there live and I can tell you that the crowd was red hot all night long! It's tough to choose a favorite match from this event. PAC vs. Akira Tozawa was simply unreal with high flying, hard hitting action. Yamato vs. Austin Aries had emotional investment and was a strong match that had everything from high-flying to technical wrestling. It's going to be difficult for anyone to pry the Freedom Gate title away from Yamato. But I think it may very well have been the Main Event Grudge Match Six Man Traditional tag featuring Blood Warriors of CIMA, Naruki Doi & Ricochet vs. Ronin of Chuck Taylor, Johnny Gargano & Rich Swann that stole the show. Truthfully, Tozawa vs. PAC makes this an automatic buy but when you combine it with Aries vs. Yamato and the six man tag team match-up, you have an event that is very special and will be remembered for years to come.

Note from Wayne:
If you are ordering this pay-per-view or getting the DVD, the top three matches are ones that you really should go out of your way in seeing. The tag-team match really blew me away tonight, and showed just how good a tag-team division there really is in Ring of Honor Wrestling and why World Wrestling Entertainment are missing quality tag-team wrestling that it once had pride in promoting.
